Your Workspace

It is where you keep and store important documents that are needed to conduct whatever business you are in. It is an important part of who we are, and it also helps to define the kind of employee that we strive to be.
When you are working- no matter where you work, your work space should be organized. I can still remember going over my best friend, Kristin’s house when I was in high school. She would later wind up being the Salutatorian. I was at her house for the first time, and we were going to study for a test together. However, when I followed her back to her room, my jaw dropped in horror. What should have been a bedroom looked as if a tornado had come through, specifically sought out this one bedroom and then turned everything upside down. It was only after a few seconds when I saw Kristin go over to one corner to dig through a pile of papers that I realized she was where her desk was (or should have been). Her desk was so inundated with papers, dog-eared books and loose-leaf that you actually could not even see any one part of the desk.
I was only too happy when she found what she had been looking for and redirected us to the kitchen where we would be doing our actual studying. Her mother came home a couple of hours later, and I half expected her to scream when she walked past Kristin’s room, but she didn’t even seem to mind. I should have guessed that this had been going on for quite some time now! I simply couldn’t understand how someone who was so smart could be such a slob. Baffled, I turned to her and asked her how she was ever able to find anything in her room to which she responded that there was a method to her madness. Oh, there was madness alright..but a method?
Years later, I would meet my boyfriend and discover that he was the same way. Extremely intelligent, he was also an extremely sloppy person. He would wait until things got so out of control that he would be forced to clean up. However, cleaning up often simply meant shoving everything into a plastic bag where he would forget about it. It is only now that I am able to begin working towards accepting the fact that not all people are neat- nor do they have to be neat- in order to be successful or get things done on time. I watch in amazement as my boyfriend will come home from work and look for a piece of scrap paper that he scribbled down some piece of information on. He’ll go over to his work space where he has a ton of papers strewn about, fish through the pile for a second and actually find what it was he was looking for! On the other hand, when I need to find something, I step into my office and go over to my labeled file folder in order to find what I’m looking for.
