I took my wife out for our 18th Anniversary at our favorite movie theater, The Warren Theater, here in Moore, Oklahoma. We elected for their “Theater for 2” package which includes seats in the balcony and included are two drinks, two dinners, and one desert. The package deal cost $65.00 which is not too bad. As you know the cost of food at any movie theater is high. Anyway, they seat you at your reserved seats and then explain that when you are ready to order, just push the red button.
We got to the theater about 35 minutes before the movie was to start. We had to wait for 5 minutes before being seated. We ordered our drinks and food and it arrived about fifteen minutes later. We waited until the movie was half over before we ordered our desert. The whole experience was awesome as the food was great and the view from the balcony was great. If you have not at least tried the balcony at the Warren Theater yet then I highly recommend it.
The movie that we watched was SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. This is the movie that recently won eight academy awards. It is the story of Jamal Malik from the slums of Mumbai. Along with his older brother, they are both orphaned when their mother is killed by a mob that are hunting Muslins. They escape and along the way they pickup a young girl, Latika, who is also orphaned. They embark on a journey starting off with their life in the slums. They are rescued by a guy whom they think he is an angel as he gives them shelter, feeds them, and they are even allowed to have seconds. It turns out that he is using the children and making them work and beg for money. He also cripples some of the children so people will give them more money as they would feel sorry for the children who are crippled or blind. The three of them manage to escape the camp but the girl is captured when they try to board a moving train.
Jamal and his brother spend the rest of their young life growing up in the city stealing shoes and touring tourists. They manage to acquire some money and seek out Latika and find her. The guy that discovered them in the slums and brought them to his camp tries to stop them and Jamal’s older brother shoots and kills him. They are all separated again with Jamal’s brother joining the mob. Jamal finally finds his brother and Latika but are separated again. Before their separation he observes Latika watching her favorite TV show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”.
After their final separation, Jamal is determined to find Latika as he has loved her all this time. He decides that the best way to find Latika is to get on the TV show “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”. Jamal is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions. Intrigued by Jamal’s story, the jaded Police Inspector begins to wonder what a young man with no apparent desire for riches is really doing on this game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out.
Jamal’s brother sees that Latika is watching TV and sees Jamal on the show. He then allows Latika to escape along with the keys to his boss’s car and his cell phone. Jamal has one life line left on the final question which he does not know the answer to. He calls the only phone number that he knows, his brother’s cell phone, and when Latika answers he learns that she is safe. She does not know the answer either but that doesn’t really matter. Jamal just wants Latika! He guesses at the answer and wins the money. In the end Jamal and Latika are united for the last time.
My wife and I both really enjoyed the movie and highly recommend that you watch it when you get the chance. I actually saw the movie for the second time and it made more sense the second time around as I could follow his life better than the first viewing. Post if you have any comments.
